Turn your D.R.E.A.M. into Reality
Challenge yourself.
So you're interested in riding your bike for charity, and you think the D.R.E.A.M. Ride is the ride for you. Before you commit we just want to go over a few things.
What you can expect from the D.R.E.A.M. Ride:
For the Northeast ride housing will begin
on Aug 3rd in Boston, MA and end on Aug 17th in New York City, NY.
The majority of this housing will be provided by churches, community
organizations, or individuals. Most evenings will be spent sleep on
the floor. We will not be camping outside.
The D.R.E.A.M. Ride will be providing you with three meals on each day we are riding. Breakfast and Dinner on each day will be donated by organizations in each of the towns we are staying while lunch will be a meal had on the road during a break in riding. It will usually consist of sandwiches and fruit. Snacks will consist of anything donated to us during the course of the ride. We will make sure that you receive an adequate number of calories each day. Because much of the food will be donated we are unable to guarantee vegetarian or vegan options. Any extra snacks during the days of riding will be the responsibility of the riders. Meals on days off are also the responsibility of the riders.
Showers will be available in each town we stop in, however, in a few of these town they will be pay showers, so be prepared with a roll of quarters.
Laundry is the responsibility of the riders, however in cases when laundromats are a significant distance from our housing site, we will assist you by providing rides to and from the laundry at a time decided on by the group.
Vehicle support will be provided each day during the ride. If you become unable to continue for any reason you will be able to ride along in the support vehicle.
We will provide emergency bike repairs in order to allow you to finish each day, however any serious work on your bike is your own responsibility. We will have the location of all the bike repair shops along the route figured out ahead of time. If the shop is a significant distance from our housing site for that evening we will provide transportation to and from the shop. We want everyone to be able to ride every mile of this trip so we will do our best to make sure that can happen.
This ride is very much reliant on the kindness of relative strangers, just as the money you raise will go to help relative strangers. Because of this much of what the ride provides is based on donations. We will definitely supply you with the necessities to make this ride successful. We will also work to provide you with as many extras as possible. We will look to have bike supplies donated, maintenance and repair work discounted, and many other "extras" donated. You will be amazed at how many people along the route will reach out to help you. Last year riders received things like, a free ride back from the town pool, one gas station gave us free beverages and offered to drive us the rest of the way to our destination, and one women welcomed us into her home for snacks and a cold drink.
What we expect from you, the riders:
Before the ride even begins we expect you to raise the minimum funds
required to participate. Your registration fee of 200 dollars counts
towards your total donations. For the Northeast ride you are
required to raise 2000 dollars.
You will be responsible for transporting you, your bike, and luggage to Boston, MA for the Northeast ride. You are also responsible for your trip out of New York City, NY at the conclusion of the ride.
Financially you will be responsible for the cost of doing laundry, a few showers, meals on rest days, extra snacks while riding, maintenance and repairs for your bike, and any souvenirs, special trips, mailing postcards, or entertainment in our host towns.
This ride is a cooperative effort. We expect all of the riders to contribute the the successful completion of the ride, not only by cycling as many of the miles as possible, but by assisting each other with daily tasks. Each morning the support vehicles will need to be loaded with luggage, each evening it will need to be unloaded. Lunches will need to be prepared each evening. We ask that you help clean up after meals and assist our hosts in what ever way possible. The D.R.E.A.M. Ride as an organization will be judged by the host communities where we stop by your behavior and we ask that you help us paint a positive picture for future rides.
Finally, on the ride, you will be asked to follow three simple rules while on the bikes.
- When on your bike wear your helmet. It doesn't matter if you're riding a block down the street to the grocery store, or 100 miles to the next destination, a helmet is a must.
- When riding from one host town to the next always be riding with at least one other person. This is a safety precaution.
- No wearing headphones or any headset of any kind while riding your bike. Headphones inhibit your ability to communicate with other riders as well as hear vehicles coming.
Volunteering
Our primary need for volunteers during the ride is in the form of
drivers. We will have at least one, and most likely two support
vehicles or more on each ride. If you are willing to drive one of
the vehicles for all or a part of the ride please sign up below.
Together, we will achieve amazing things.
